Job Description:
We are looking for a community builder who has a strong personal connection to 2SLGBTQIA+ and Indigenous communities, preferably in Wabanaki territories. This position will be best suited to an individual who has both community building skills and organizational skills and is passionate about working with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
At PEERS Alliance, our work is based in trauma-informed practice and harm reduction. We serve people of all genders and sexual orientations, and work for the safety and thriving of 2SLGBTQIA+ people in Epekwitk. Our programming strives to address the underlying issues affecting the health and welfare of our communities by countering stigma and creating environments where all are welcome. In all our work we strive to be anti-racist. We support those living with and at risk for HIV, Hep C and all sexually transmitted and bloodborne infections by offering a variety of programs and services targeted to diverse communities in PEI.
Position Details:
- This two-year position begins on April 1, 2025 ends March 31, 2027 with the possibility of extension.
- This position is based in Charlottetown, but relationship building meetings, events, and activities will take place in communities all over the island.
- This position will include occasional work on evenings and weekends.
- As travel around the Island is required, a valid license and a reliable vehicle is required.
- This position is full time: 37.5hrs/week (on average) at the rate of $32/hour and includes a benefits plan and 12 paid sick days/year.
- Paid time off: During the first year of work there will be two weeks of paid vacation. During the second year there will be three weeks.
- In addition to vacation time, there are two weeks of paid office closure during the December/January holidays, and a scheduled paid mental health week each May.
Duties of the job:
- Outreach and relationship building with:
- Indigenous communities, organizations, and associations on the island of Epekwitk
2SLGBTQIA+ Indigenous people - Indigenous elders on Epekwitk
- Accompanying and supporting PEERS Alliance’s adult 2SLGBTQIA+ programming.
- Indigenous communities, organizations, and associations on the island of Epekwitk
- Support PEERS Alliance staff to identify barriers to 2Spirit and Indigiqueer participation.
- Collaborate with staff of partner groups to coordinate two gatherings over two years which include culturally relevant activities for 2Spirit/Indigiqueer community members.
- Collaborate with PEERS Alliance staff on other project activities which include intercultural and interfaith gatherings to reduce hate against the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
- As needed, support service navigation for community members in collaboration with the PEERS Alliance staff team and other service providers. Identify barriers to services.
- Participate in PEERS Alliance staff team meetings and retreats in person.
- Lead communications and promotion of project activities.
- Participate in committees and advisory groups as needed.
- Write reports about project activities to maintain funding.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Good communication skills. Responsive by email and other messaging platforms.
- Ability to keep confidentiality and share information appropriately.
- Ability and interest to work with people with diverse perspectives.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues or partners.
- Willing to work flexible hours (position will include some evening and weekend work).
- Work or volunteer experience in a community setting, in a leadership or coordination role, and/or in intergenerational contexts is a strong asset.
- Related education (diploma or degree) will be considered an asset, but is not required.
- A vulnerable sector check will be required.
