Job Description:
Natures Crops International (NCI), a leading manufacturer and supplier of specialty plant oils for use in personal care, dietary supplement, and food industries, has an opening for a Laboratory Technician at our oilseed processing facility and refinery in Kensington, PEI. The Laboratory Technician will report to the Laboratory Supervisor.
The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for laboratory-based tasks, which include product sampling, testing, measuring, recording, and interpreting results. The position will comprise primarily of analytical chemistry but may also involve broader analysis in the general life sciences discipline. The Laboratory Technician will also provide technical support to enable the laboratory and production facility to function effectively while adhering to standard protocols and health and safety guidelines.
The Laboratory Technician will carry out standard and investigatory tests to assess and monitor product quality. The main function of the Laboratory Technician is to perform specific procedures that support effective and efficient product manufacture and ensure product quality is maintained and monitored at every stage of the process.
Responsibilities:
- Perform routine analytical tests to generate reliable and precise data to monitor product quality and support production
- Carry out routine tasks accurately and follow strict methodologies to carry out analysis
- Prepare specimens and collect samples
- Calibrate, maintain, and operate standard laboratory equipment (ie. centrifuges, balances, pipettors)
- Ensure the laboratory is well stocked and inventory is maintained
- Record and interpret results to present to colleagues
- Use computers including MS Office programs, databases, operation of analytical instrument software and performing mathematical calculations for the preparation of graphs
- Conduct scientific literature searches on identified topics relevant to the research
- Follow and ensure strict safety procedures and safety checks
- Sample and package material for internal testing, external testing, and customer samples
- General laboratory housekeeping and cleaning of equipment, glassware, etc.
Qualifications:
- Recent graduate of a bioscience/biotechnology or science college program, or bachelor’s degree in chemistry
- Experience working in a laboratory setting considered an asset
- Experience in Gas Chromatography considered an asset
- Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office, Excel, and Word
- Strong organizational and communication skills
This position is a temporary, 12-month contract with the possibility of an extension. Pay rate is $23/hour. Some shift work required. Anticipated start date is Jan 6th, 2025.
