Food Product Developer

One Year Term Position Commencing ASAP

Canada’s Smartest Kitchen, located at the Tourism and Culinary Center, is seeking a highly motivated and entrepreneurial candidate to join the Product Development team.

Reporting to the Director, the ideal candidate will:

  • Coordinate multiple food and beverage product development and/or refinement initiatives through various stages of development; market analysis, ideation, formulation, bench-level prototype development, packaging options, etc.
  • Manage ingredient functionality and recipe formulation within processing and costing parameters.
  • Conduct competitive reviews to assist in identifying opportunities.
  •  Develop and document new/revised product formulas and processes based on market demand and client requirements.
  • Source and investigate new ingredients/technologies that may have potential application for existing or future products.
  • Assist in sourcing equipment and developing manufacturing processes for new products.
  • Keep abreast of emerging industry trends via various forms of professional development.
  • Interpret experimental or analytical results while keeping meticulous written records of all tests conducted.
  • Ensure products meet predetermined national and international quality standards.
  • Independently develop project work plans to execute projects efficiently.
  • Consult technical resources to further product knowledge and apply the learning to execute projects.
  • Participate in product sensory trials using internal and external panels.
  • When required, provide onsite support based on client need.
  • Prepare and present reports/results, both written and oral, with clients, peers, and management.
  • Coordinate with and leverage the supplier and academic community to achieve project goals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary credential in culinary arts, product development, food technology, or a related discipline.
  • Five years of culinary focused experience working in a professional kitchen and/or an industrialized food production environment.
  • Experience in food processing, packaging, pilot plant, and/or co-packing environments.
  • Experience integrating foundations of food innovation into projects in areas such as value-added product development, prototype testing, and ingredient reactions.
  • Experience writing SOPs/GMPs.
  • Experience with quality assurance and/or quality control processes.
  • Experience in regulatory affairs regarding food and beverage import and export.
  • Strong project and budget management skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills (oral, written, and electronic).
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Awareness of current and emerging food/lifestyle trends.
  • HACCP certification would be considered an asset.

Proof of credentials or equivalencies from accredited regional or federal post-secondary institutions and/or their foreign equivalents will be required at the time of job offer.
