Job Description:

The Federation of PEI Municipalities and the PEI Watershed Alliance, through the PEI Forested Landscape Priority Place Initiative, aim to see a diverse and connected forest landscape that is conserved and cared for by Islanders and provides high-quality habitat to species at risk. The purpose of this position is to engage with municipalities to build awareness of ecologically important areas, biodiversity and species at risk, watershed management, and the land-use planning and legislative tools they can use to set and reach conservation goals. This position will provide leadership in measurement, reporting, analysis, planning and research on issues and trends pertinent to conservation through municipal land-use planning exercises.

Duties will include: Establishing and maintaining strong working relationships with municipalities, local watershed groups, and the Forests, Fish, and Wildlife Division Providing relevant ecological information to municipalities to inform land-use planning decisions, including:

  • Identifying protected areas (natural areas, wildlife management areas, historic sites)
  • Identifying significant and/or sensitive areas where development may be detrimental to habitat conservation goals
  • Identifying areas where landscape connectivity could be improved
  • Species at risk occurrences and potential SAR habitat
  • Providing watershed plans

Sharing information on opportunities for municipalities to engage in conservation and restoration (e.g. bylaw examples, Natural Areas Protection Act and other legislative tools, Carbon Capture Program, Forest Enhancement Program, Watershed Management) Participating in and contributing to PEI Forested Landscape Priority Place core team meetings Other related duties as required

Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g. Conservation, Land-use planning, etc.) or equivalent work experience Individuals must possess highly developed skills and knowledge concerning policy research, communications, project management and be team project orientated Excellent interpersonal skills, written and oral communication skills Demonstrated ability to:

  • Facilitate meetings and workshops;
  • Undertake research and analysis using a variety of resources and tools;
  • Undertake rigorous research on complex issues;
  • Organize, plan and think strategically;
  • Work as an integral and contributing member of the PEI Forested Landscape Priority Place core team

Experience working with watershed groups and/or municipalities would be considered an asset Experience with land-use planning would be considered an asset.
