Job Description:

Environmental Industrial Services Inc. (EISI) operates water and wastewater systems across Prince Edward Island for many public and private entities. EISI’s certified professional water and wastewater operators work on site at client facilities to meet Federal and Provincial regulations and the terms of existing development and/or operating agreements.

The successful candidate will work with the EISI team of operators, to ensure the safety of water and wastewater and the protection of the environment at facilities across PEI. This position is for the operator role for Western operations, however the operator will support other EISI operations (across PEI).

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor water and wastewater treatment processes, reading flow meters, gauges and other recording instruments to measure water output and consumption levels, bacterial content, chlorine and fluoride levels;
  • Collect and test water samples for chemical and bacterial content, interpret test results and instrument readings and adjustment plant equipment and systems to ensure quality control and report the outcomes properly and efficiently;
  • Complete and maintain plant logs, reports and statistics;
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance and monitor & inspect plant equipment & systems to detect equipment malfunctions and to ensure plant systems are operating normally;
  • Troubleshoot problems on water and wastewater systems;
  • Operate and monitor computerized control systems and related equipment in water distribution and wastewater treatment plants;
  • Provide verbal or written instructions for process control changes to water and wastewater systems to ensure requirements are guidelines and requirements are met;
  • Perform security checks in plant and on grounds;
  • Respond to public enquiries regarding water quality issues and emergencies;
  • Perform minor maintenance and assist skilled tradespersons with installation and repair of plant machinery;
  • Complete general maintenance including cleaning equipment and building, painting, snow removal;
  • Provide vacation, sick leave relief, and operational support to other EISI staff; and
  • Complete overtime and on-call after regular working hours as required across the province (Note: Employees must be available to respond to on-call within a reasonable period and are compensated accordingly).

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Certified water and wastewater treatment operator – Class 1 Wastewater Collection, Class 1 Wastewater Treatment, and Class 1 Water Distribution (Relevant trade experience in plumbing and/or electrical could be considered); If the successful applicant does not hold the necessary certifications, there will be a requirement to write and pass Class 1 certification exams in Water Distribution, Wastewater Collection and Wastewater Treatment within two years;
  • Analytical, problem-solving, planning and scheduling skills;
  • Must have a good mechanical aptitude and the ability to trouble shoot/problem solve the source of electrical, mechanical and SCADA computer issues;
  • Must have a good knowledge of water distribution and wastewater treatment processes;
  • Basic understanding of the skilled trades for the maintenance and repair of a variety of equipment and structures, including but not limited to the following trades: electrical, plumbing, and carpentry;
  • Sound working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines, Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations and other relevant regulatory and legislative acts, codes, policies, guidelines and procedures related to water and wastewater operations and maintenance and  health and safety procedures/WHMIS;
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics and chemistry to make calculations for chemical and operating processes;
  • Ability to interpret maintenance manuals, blueprints and other technical specifications; use and storage of industrial chemicals;
  • Familiarity with computers, including monitoring and operating systems;
  • Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems would be an asset;
  • Good oral and written communication skills to liaise with a variety of people including coworkers, clients, the regulator and suppliers;
  • Ability to multi-task, and work both independently and with a team;
  • Reliable, dependable and punctual;
  • Customer service skills;
  • Valid driver’s license; and
  • Ability to perform manual labour and the capacity to lift up to 50lb and perform physically demanding tasks.

The successful candidate must provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check and a satisfactory Drivers Abstract.
