Business Description

Island Weigh 95 Inc. (IW95)
PEI Dockside Monitoring & DFO Approved Tag Supplier Co.

Tammy Arsenault, President

Island Weigh 95, Inc., PEI's Dockside Monitoring Company, is looking for individuals to do seasonal work as Dockside Observers at various docks across PEI. In 2020 we are looking for individuals within a 20 km radius to ports near Lennox Island, Rustico, French River, Borden, Summerside, Wood Islands, Morell and North Lake.

We are taking names of individuals who may be interested in taking our free one-week in-classroom training course, which is usually offered in March/November each year as needed. Courses may be offered in Charlottetown/Tignish area. Also, when the opportunity is there, on-the-job training will be provided by a trained Dockside Observer to help new hires become familiar with the species and the paper work required.

About the company
The Dockside Monitoring program started in the early 1990s, and IW95 now employs 25 to 30 Dockside Observers per year. Dockside Monitoring records help determine when quota allocations for specified species have been reached. The information collected is also used by biologists to help gauge the health of fish stocks.

Job duties
Prior to arriving at the harbour with their catch, fishers are required to call a Dockside Monitoring Company (DMC) to arrange to have a Dockside Observer meet fisher/buyer to collect and verify logs sheets, observe and record landings and report details back to office.

Since 1995 we have been providing third party verification of landings for Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) for any fishery under Dockside Monitoring Program (DMP), such as snow crab, toad crab, rock crab, ground fish, herring, bluefin tuna, mackerel and whelk.

As fisheries are sometimes unpredictable, there is a possibility, in the future, of more species being placed under DMP, and if so, these jobs may turn into permanent- seasonal full-time work.

Interested candidates must have:

· Valid driver's license

· Reliable vehicle

· Proof of grade 12 or equivalent

· Physical condition, capable to perform monitoring duties

Great work ethic

o Obtain a NAME BASED CRIMINAL RECORD CHECK through your local RCMP office (for this you will need to bring 2 pieces of ID with you, 1 of which much be photo ID). You must bring the results of this check to the course.

Individuals must NOT hold a fisher's registration card (deckhand) in the same calendar year that they are designated as a Dockside Observer. Can not be an owner, operator, manager or employee of any fish plant or enterprise.

We are looking for individuals who will be available for on-call work from Victoria to East Point from mid-July to mid-late October, and from Victoria to North Cape from mid-late June to late October. Because this work is sporadic and requires staff to be on-call, we find that individuals whom are semi-retired or retired are the right fit for this part-time job.

We need employees who are flexible enough to work casual hours at any time during the busy season. Wages are competitive plus mileage.

For more information, or if you think this is a right fit for you, please forward your resume (including DOB) to the email address below. Subject line; Dockside Observer.

Space is limited and only those selected for the course will be contacted.
