Business Description
The Prince Edward Island Human Rights Commission (PEIHRC) is an independent agency responsible for administering and enforcing the Prince Edward Island Human Rights Act. The Act prohibits unequal and prejudicial treatment in specified areas on the basis of specified personal characteristics, also known as prohibited grounds of discrimination.
A team of dedicated staff members are responsible for the daily operations of the Commission in education, investigation, complaint resolution and advising government.
Part-time Commissioners are appointed by members of the Standing Committee on Health and Social Development of the Legislative Assembly of PEI. Commissioners oversee the operations of the Commission and conduct panel hearings when required. The Commission reports annually to the Legislature through the Minister of Justice and Public Safety.
