OHS Officer/Farm Safety Specialist

FULL TIME PERMANENT POSITION

The Workers Compensation Board (WCB) helps to build safe and healthy workplaces in PEI and supports workers with benefits and services to reduce the impact of work-related injuries.

The OHS Officer/Farm Safety Specialist is responsible for the development, promotion and implementation of occupational health & safety programs and strategies in all PEI workplaces, with a focus on farm workplaces. This position enforces the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Youth Employment Act, and the Smoke Free Places Act and their associated Regulations by providing information, guidance and compliance orders to employers, contractors, workers, unions, and professionals with respect to their related duties and responsibilities.

The OHS Officer/Farm Safety Specialist reports to the Manager, Occupational Health and Safety.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Supports labour and management to work cooperatively to attain the highest standard of health and safety in the workplace.
  • Conducts workplace inspections as defined under the applicable Acts noted above.
  • Promotes the use of the Farm Safety Code of Practice as a best practice for farm workplaces through presentations, workshops, and education sessions where needed.
  • Investigates injuries and fatal accidents.
  • Investigates allegations of violations of the Acts noted above.
  • Ensures compliance by issuing Work Orders (including immediate Stop Work Orders).
  • Initiates prosecution actions and developing the evidence file for such actions.
  • Works with the Offices of the Crown Attorney and the Provincial Coroner as needed, as part of accident investigations and court proceedings.
  • Maintains current knowledge of policies, procedures, Acts, regulations, codes and standards.

The OHS Officer/Farm Safety Specialist must be self-directed and be able to effectively work in a wide variety of industries and workplaces, and must be able to analyze and problem-solve very complex situations.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess a University Degree in a related discipline combined with considerable work-related experience in regulatory enforcement and/or workplace safety (minimum 3 years) or two years post-secondary education in a related discipline combined with extensive work-related experience in regulatory enforcement and/or safety (minimum 5 years). Applicants must have considerable experience in program development and/or delivery. Applicants must also possess excellent interpersonal, communications, and presentation skills.  Experience interpreting and applying legislation is required.  Knowledge of current farm practices and technology would be considered an asset.

Preference will be given to candidates who have enforcement experience and that have obtained or who are working towards a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation.

Bilingual in both French and English would be considered an asset.

Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered and must be articulated in the application process.

A satisfactory criminal records check is required for this position.
