Job Description:

Overall Position Mandate:  
The childcare Cook is responsible for menu planning, purchasing of groceries and supplies in daily preparation of nutritious meals and snacks served to children enrolled in the centre. The kitchen is to be managed and the work of the cook is to be conducted in strict compliance with the Health Department, Early Childcare Board and other applicable legislation. The Cook works in consultation with the Centre Director to ensure the smooth operation of the kitchen and its coordination with the other programs of the centre.

 Key Position Objectives:   
Kitchen

  • Advanced planning of lunch menus and snacks in accordance with the Canada Food Guide, posting of menus for parents and staff.
  • Conduct housekeeping tasks necessary to maintain the kitchen in an organised clean, safe and hygienic condition at all times.
  • Deliver and collect lunch snack trays to and from all classrooms.
  • Complete clean up after each meal (dishes, countertops, etc.)
  • Meets with a health inspector as required to ensure the kitchen and practices are following the health codes.
  • Regular inventory of kitchen equipment and supplies.

Ordering/Purchasing

  • Purchase all groceries in order to implement the planned menu, in consideration of the centre’s food budget and in consultation with the Centre Director.
  • Purchase all household supplies for the centre
  • Unpacking and checking of orders.
  • Follow established procedures regarding forwarding of all the receipts related to purchase.

Program Support

  • Establish and maintain open communication with parents regarding children’s dietary restrictions, allergies, etc
  • Assist in administration of first aid, as required.
  • Participate in fire drills and other emergency procedures as necessary.
  • Assisting the childcare programs as required by the Director in order to enhance or maintain child staff ratios.

Qualifications

  • Food safety certificate.
  • First aid and CPR.
  • Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Experience as a cook, preferably in a childcare setting, is an asset.
