Job Description:
Position Overview: The SEAM Mental Health Facilitator (MHF) will collaborate with the SEAM Hub Supervisor, SEAM Coordinator, and SEAM Activities Facilitator to provide mental health support, resources, and guidance to youth participants (ages 15-18). The Skills Enhancement and Mentorship Program (SEAM) includes a variety of pre-activities and adventures (such as kayaking, museum tours, horseback riding etc.) guest speakers and volunteer work. The MHF will focus on enhancing the mental wellness of the youth, facilitating personal development, and addressing barriers to success. This role requires strong communication, organizational skills, and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality and respect for participants.
Pre-Program (Preparation Phase May 20th- June 27th)
- Collaborate with the SEAM Hub Supervisor, SEAM Coordinator and ResourceAbilities’ Employment
- Manager to understand the program, its history, goals, and expected outcomes.
- Work with high schools, justice services, and social assistance programs to assess the barriers faced by referred youth.
- Participate in interviews with the SEAM Hub Supervisor, SEAM Coordinator, and SEAM Activities
- Facilitator to identify and select youth participants for the program.
- Attend a one-week training program to complete ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) or Mental Health First Aid certification prior to working with youth on June 30th.
- Organize a Mental Health package/kit for the participants, ensuring all resources are relevant and appropriate.
- Research and outline activities that focus on Mental Health Awareness and personal development for youth participants.
- Based on identified barriers, create and deliver presentations and activities to address these issues, either individually or in group settings.
- Maintain confidentiality and respect for participants at all times.
Program Delivery (June 30th – August 15th):
- Provide Mental Wellness supports and awareness to youth participants, focusing on mental health education and coping strategies.
- Present the Mental Health Emergency Plan to staff and participants as necessary.
- Lead activities aimed at personal development, including topics such as:
- Handling stress
- Mental health awareness
- Communication skills
- Self-motivation and self-image
- Positive self-talk and self-esteem
- Coping skills
- Barriers to success
- Navigating toxic environments
- Breaking cycles and promoting positive change
- Assist the Coordinator and Activities Facilitator with travel-related tasks and participant concerns.
- Fill in for the SEAM Coordinator when required, such as during event planning or appointments.
- Conduct regular check-ins with youth participants to monitor progress and provide ongoing support.
- Prepare a daily journal documenting the progress of each participant.
- Provide weekly reports to the SEAM Hub Supervisor and Employment Manager, including summaries of participant progress and feedback.
- Refer youth to additional support services, such as Student Well Being Teams or external counseling services, as necessary.
- Carry out other duties as assigned.
Program Wrap-up (August 19th – August 23rd):
- Compile and submit a Final Report evaluating the summer program, highlighting achievements, challenges, and recommendations for future programs.
- Meet with high school staff and Student Well Being Teams to share insights and suggestions for supporting the participants moving forward.
- Assist with creating a comprehensive binder containing activities, resources, and documentation used throughout the program. This binder will serve as a reference guide for future Mental Health Facilitators.
Qualifications:
- Completion of ASIST or Mental Health First Aid certification (required prior to working with participants).
- Experience working with youth, particularly in the context of mental health or personal development.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with professionalism.
- Experience in organizing and facilitating group activities, workshops, or training sessions.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team, while also being self-motivated and able to work independently.
