Watershed Field Supervisor

Job Description:

Our organization: Trout River Environmental Committee (TREC) is a community based environmental group in the New London Bay – Cavendish area of Prince Edward Island. Our mission is to restore and conserve the natural integrity of our nine watersheds, and to promote good stewardship, so that our watersheds can continue to enhance and support local wildlife, our communities, and the farming, fishing, and tourism industries.

Location: North Granville Community Centre, 575 Taylor Road, North Granville, PEI.

Summer Term: May 12th, 2025, 16 week term subject to funding

Pay: $20.00 per hour, 37.5 hours a week

Education: The applicant should be pursuing a post-secondary degree, diploma or certificate in biology, wildlife conservation, environment or related field and be returning to school in the fall.

Responsibilities: Direct supervision over a team of up to 5 field technicians on projects which focus on:

• • Habitat restoration
  • Climate change mitigation
  • Carbon sequestration
  • Working with farmers to reduce environmental impact, improve carbon sequestration and biodiversity
  • Community outreach and education
• Work with the Project Manager and Executive Director in planning, execution and tracking of environmental projects.
• Communicate with and gain permission from landowners for restoration and monitoring activities.
• Lead a team in habitat enhancement and monitoring activities such as native tree/shrub planting, stream restoration, saltmarsh restoration, construction and installation of bird and bat boxes, wildlife surveys (electrofishing, acoustic monitoring, trail camera’s, etc.)
• Conduct various environmental surveys and record accurate data and observations (e.g. wildlife signs, sedimentation, fish passage barriers, amphibian monitoring, bat monitoring etc.).
• Collect and analyze water quality data using handheld YSI, photometer, and in stream temperature and DO loggers.
• Assist and lead in the delivery of educational workshops and community events.
• Maintain public walking trails and community gardens.

Essential Skills:

• Experience with and knowledge of watershed restoration work, past work experience an asset.
• Comfortable working in and around water, ability to lift heavy objects, and endurance to stand and walk for long periods of time.
• Able to work under potentially adverse outdoor conditions, including in heat, cold, rain, and biting insects.
• Comfortable working with hand tools such as saws, drills, with the possibility for chainsaw operator training and use.
• Good analytical, communication and organizational skills.
• Reliable and able to follow instructions.
