Occupational Hygienist
FULL TIME TEMPORARY POSITION
(beginning immediately for approximately 1 year, with possible extension)
The Workers Compensation Board (WCB) helps to build safe and healthy workplaces in PEI and provides benefits and services to reduce the impact of work-related injuries.
The Occupational Hygienist is involved in the day-to-day operations of the Occupational Health and Safety Division and is responsible for inspecting workplaces, under authority of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, for compliance as it relates to health effects caused by exposure to chemicals, physical agents (e.g. noise) and biological agents (e.g. bacteria). The Occupational Hygienist is a specialist in the field of occupational hygiene and is responsible for providing information to various stakeholders on specific hazards related to work processes and materials. The Occupational Hygienist offers advice on how to minimize workplace exposures, and enforces legislative requirements related to occupational hygiene.
The Occupational Hygienist reports to the Manager, Occupational Health and Safety. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Providing expertise, advice and guidance to the Manager on issues of workplace health hazards.
- Using professional knowledge to promote injury and illness prevention activities outside the minimum standard imposed in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
- Providing regulatory direction to employers and stakeholders with issues related to occupational hygiene.
- Addressing workplace air quality issues and providing assistance with directives for safe work procedures based on interpretation of testing results.
- Investigating workplace accidents and resolving complaints.
- Completing the required Hazardous Products Act regular inspections, plus focused inspections, complaints or investigations as they arise.
- Reporting to the Provincial Radiation Protection Coordinator and assisting in the development of Ionizing Radiation Regulations and any future amendment.
- Providing guidance on national strategies for pandemic response, including Personal Protective Equipment.
- Maintaining current knowledge of policies, procedures, the Act, codes and standards.
- Other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
- The successful candidate will possess a University Degree in a related discipline (i.e. Occupational Hygiene, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering or Environmental Studies) combined with considerable related work experience.
- Applicants must have considerable experience in program development and/or delivery.
- Must have or be eligible to obtain certification as an Occupational Hygienist (ROH) or (CIH).
- Must be familiar with the calibration and use of the basic testing instruments and monitors.
- Formal training in occupational health and safety principles and practices from a recognized university or college and a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation are considered assets. Previous enforcement experience is also an asset.
- Must have excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications and presentation skills; and must have demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers in the workplace, including the ability to extract information from a research data base.
Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered and must be articulated in the application process.
