Summary:
The Parks and Recreation Maintenance Technician is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of Town owned parks, recreational facilities, and related infrastructure. This position ensures that the parks, trails, sports fields, playgrounds, and other public spaces are safe, clean, and well-maintained for public use. The role requires both fieldwork and preventive maintenance, as well as working collaboratively with other departments to enhance community spaces.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform regular inspections, maintenance, and repairs of parks, playgrounds, sports fields, winter skating facilities, summer and winter trails, and other recreational facilities. Tasks include mowing lawns, trimming bushes, planting flowers, maintaining trees, and caring for outdoor landscapes.
- Operate and maintain a variety of equipment such as mowers, tractors, lawn care tools, facility grooming equipment and vehicles. Ensure all equipment is serviced regularly and in proper working order.
- Maintain the appearance and cleanliness of Terry Fox Sport Complex, turf areas, ballfields, public parks, facilities, and green spaces. This includes litter collection, waste management, and cleaning of restrooms, shelters, and picnic areas.
- Assist with landscaping projects, including planting trees, flowers, shrubs, and grass.
- Conduct regular safety inspections of playgrounds, athletic courts, benches, and other park amenities. Identify and report any safety hazards, making repairs or adjustments as needed.
- Clear snow and ice from sidewalks, decks, building entrances and pathways in parks and recreational areas during winter months to ensure public safety.
- Prepare and maintain athletic fields by marking boundaries, repairing turf, and ensuring proper drainage.
- Use of hand and power tools for park and facility landscape maintenance.
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of public events, including outdoor concerts, festivals, and community sports activities. Ensure parks and recreation areas are prepared for these events.
- Provide support for pool maintenance as needed.
- Respond to urgent maintenance needs such as downed trees, damaged infrastructure, or hazardous conditions. Assist with storm clean-up, facility damage control, and emergency repairs.
- Perform other such related duties, responsibilities and functions as may be assigned.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
- Ability to operate and maintain a variety of landscaping equipment, tools, and machinery.
- Working knowledge of carpentry techniques, tools and materials; ability to perform basic construction and repair work is considered an asset.
- Capable of performing a wide range of semi-skilled and unskilled tasks related to parks, facilities and infrastructure maintenance.
- Knowledge of health and safety standards, safe work practices and procedures related to parks and facility maintenance.
- Experience operating, maintaining and repairing small engine equipment is considered an asset.
- Understanding of outdoor pool operations and safety.
- Knowledge of playground equipment inspections and installations.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.
- Capable of working independently with minimal supervision, take initiative and handle a variety of tasks.
- Basic computer skills, including using email and work order software.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience in maintenance of trails, playground, playground equipment, ballfields, and outdoor pools.
- Certification in playground safety and swimming pool operations (or the ability to obtain certifications).
- Additional training in lawn care, landscaping, horticulture is an asset.
- Certification in First Aid, CPR and WHMIS (or the ability to obtain certifications).
- Valid Class 5 driver’s licence required.
Work Environment:
- Must be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays as required.
- Ability to fill in for staff during turnover or unanticipated leaves of absence.
- Position requires physical labor, including heavy lifting, bending, standing for extended periods, and operating machinery.
- On-call availability may be required for emergency situations.
- Work is primarily performed outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, rain, and snow.
