Job Description:

Position Summary
The Inclusion Support Worker provides individualized support to children who require additional assistance to participate successfully in the childcare program. The position works closely with educators, families, and support professionals to promote the child’s safety, development, inclusion, and participation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized support to assigned children throughout the day.
  • Assist children in participating in classroom activities, routines, transitions, outdoor play, and group experiences.
  • Follow individualized support plans and recommendations provided by the child’s support team.
  • Support children’s social, emotional, behavioural, communication, and developmental needs.
  • Use positive, respectful, and developmentally appropriate strategies to support behaviour and participation.
  • Help children develop independence, self-help skills, communication, and social skills.
  • Maintain active supervision and ensure the child’s safety at all times.
  • Assist with personal care needs, including toileting, diapering, dressing, meals, and hygiene when required.
  • Adapt activities, materials, and the environment to support the child’s individual needs.
  • Work collaboratively with classroom educators to ensure the child remains included in the daily program.
  • Communicate observations and concerns to the classroom educator and management.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and centre information.
  • Participate in meetings, training, professional development, and consultations as required.
  • Follow all Shining Stars policies, procedures, health and safety requirements, and PEI childcare regulations.

The Inclusion Support Worker is expected to:

  • Treat every child with patience, dignity, respect, and compassion.
  • Promote inclusion rather than separating children from their peers whenever possible.
  • Encourage independence rather than completing tasks unnecessarily for the child.
  • Remain engaged and attentive while working with children.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Work respectfully and cooperatively with educators, families, and support professionals.
  • Report safety concerns, incidents, or significant changes in the child’s behaviour or needs to management.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children in a childcare, educational, or support setting is considered an asset.
  • Experience supporting children with developmental, behavioural, communication, or additional support needs is considered an asset.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification as required.
  • Required criminal record/vulnerable sector and child abuse registry checks.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, patience, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow individualized support plans and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
