PEIWA Field Technician (1-2 positions available)
Project Start: Approximately mid-May (depending on tree availability)
Contract Length:12-16-week dependent on funding.
The PEI Watershed Alliance is collaborating with the provincial government to deliver the “Watershed Area and Smaller Sites” stream of the PEI 2 Billion Trees program. Our team will work together to plant trees across the island to increase the forested area of PEI’s landscape. We’re in search of motivated individuals who enjoy working outdoors and can achieve a good quantity of work while maintaining quality, planting trees with care.
Duties:
- Load/unload trees into the truck.
- Plant trees according to site plans (ex. spacing interval, species composition) across various types of terrain and in all weather conditions which are considered safe.
- Maintain the health of seedlings in your care by monitoring for signs of stress and taking actions to prevent tree mortality (ex. apply water, move to shade).
Requirements:
- Must possess the physical ability to
- stand and/or walk for extended periods
- frequently bend
- carry a planting harness loaded with trees (weighing approximately 15-25kg)
- lift, carry, and place items weighing up to 25 k
- use hand tools required for planting
- work in all types of weather
- Must have reliable transportation to meet at Glenaldale House (257 Blooming Pt. Road, Tracadie
Cross) each workday morning and arrange their own transportation home. Teams will carpool to
planting sites with the company vehicle.
Necessary Soft skills: Punctual, adaptable, collaborative, inclusive
Asset Skills: Experience planting trees or working outdoors, first aid training, knowledge of local trees.
Remuneration: $21.00/hour (+4% vacation pay) for 40hrs hours per week.
Other information:
- Due to grant funding, these positions may be restricted to students who are entering or returning to full-time post-secondary studies in the Fall.
- Work begins at 8:00 AM each day. End times will vary depending on factors such as travel distance to sites and daily workload. Most days will finish between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM.
- We are planning to have another planting cohort sometime this growing season, however when it starts is dependent on weather conditions. Individuals with satisfactory work performance during spring planting season, and who wish to return, will be given first priority for hiring in the second cohort.
