Job Description:

Position: 1:1 Direct Support Worker/Van Driver

General Duties

• To support on site day programming that is engaging and purposeful while continuously striving to increase community inclusion and participation using the principles of person-centered planning.
• To provide on-site support to clients both alone and in groups of various sizes.  Specific duties will vary from program to program but may include computer support, assistance with personal hygiene skills, as given by supervising staff.
• To ensure the work environment is safe, clean, orderly and welcoming to all.
• To attend and participate in staff meetings, case plans, etc. as required
• Other duties as required

Specific to Duties Related to Driving/Van

Tasks:

• Time Management & Flexibility:  To arrange and post schedule to accommodate needs of clients and staff.  Being able to accommodate changes quickly and easily
• Safety: To ensure safe arrival and departures to expected locations offering personal assists (physical and non-physical) when required.  Able to make adjustments in inclement weather.
• Support:  To ensure client support needs are met for employment, community placement, etc. and treated with respect and dignity. Provide other supports to programs when not in van.  Support to social enterprises and programs with pick up of supplies and deliveries.
• Weekly cleaning duties:  in the form of washing, vacuum, windows, other interior and exterior cleaning enlisting a client in order to teach skills
• To ensure vans are in top working order and maintained including gas and all fluids, oil checks, tires, lights, etc., documenting tasks completed and reporting issues
• Provide a clean driver’s abstract and current valid driver’s license.

Knowledge:

• Customer and Personal Service — Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
• Psychology — Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders

Skills:

• Operation and Control — Controlling operations of equipment or systems.
• Social Perceptiveness — Being aware of others’ reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
• Active Listening — Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
• Operation Monitoring — Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
• Judgment and Decision Making — Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.

Abilities:

• Depth Perception — The ability to judge which of several objects is closer or farther away from you, or to judge the distance between you and an object.
• Far Vision — The ability to see details at a distance.
• Problem Sensitivity — The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
• Near Vision — The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
• Control Precision — The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.

Specific to Client Duties

• To formulate a behavioral plan specific to assigned clients in accordance with Human Services standards and personal case plan of individual
• To assist with supports needed for community inclusion and participation and/or placements.  This may include providing transportation, job coaching, etc.
• To consult with significant others and participate in daily planning. Plans will focus on needs for quality of life and inclusion in the community.
• To ensure medications are appropriately administered and documented.

Qualifications

Education:

• Successful completion of a recognized Human Services program and/or university degree in a related field.
• Specific training in Applied Behavior Analysis

Experience:

• Previous experience an asset
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Other

• Must present a satisfactorily completed criminal record check
• Must be able to demonstrate an ability to develop, implement and monitor meaningful day opportunities with and for clients.
• Must possess strong abilities to problem solve.
• Must have positive communication abilities and good public relations skills.
• Must be able to work and relate well with clients and be able to work with minimal supervision.
• Knowledge of the community and applicable contacts and resources are definite assets.
• Current First-Aid and CPR and Mandt training are an asset; must be willing to participate in training
