Assistant Technical Director

The Opportunity

The Confederation Centre of the Arts is looking for an Assistant Technical Director to be the technical point person for our off-season rental program and a key support to our summer repertory season.

Our theatre season has two parts: the summer Charlottetown Festival, and a calendar of rental productions, presented companies and events.

As the first technical contact for visiting companies and rental clients, you’ll advance their shows, solve problems early, and make sure every production is safe and well-supported. In summer, you’ll work alongside the Technical Director to keep a busy repertory schedule running smoothly, and you’ll support other events and programming as needed.

Your Focus:

Rental season

  • Act as the main technical contact for rental clients and presented companies.
  • Advance all technical requirements for incoming shows.
  • Assess riders, drawings and schedules for feasibility and flag conflicts early.
  • Coordinate crewing, schedules and logistics with Production and other CCOA departments.
  • Prepare advance documentation and support labour estimates and rental quotes.
  • Act as on-site technical representative for rental clients, including conducting facility and safety orientations.

Summer repertory

  • Assist the Technical Director with coordination of the repertory season.
  • Support stage operations including lx, audio, props, wardrobe, set builds, including assisting with construction drawings.
  • Contribute technical solutions during design and production meetings.

Safety and equipment

  • Promote safe work practices and help ensure crews and clients follow theatre policies.
  • Assist with equipment maintenance, inventories, and routine space inspections.
  • Assist in the development of safety programs or procedures related to stage operations.

What you bring:

  • Three or more years of experience in technical theatre or live event production. Experience within a unionized environment is considered an asset.
  • Diploma or degree in technical theatre or production, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Working knowledge of stage lighting, audio, video, and rigging systems, with the ability to read technical riders and drawings.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage several productions and timelines.
  • Clear, professional communication, and a client-focused approach with visiting companies.
  • A solid commitment to workplace safety; relevant certifications (such as fall protection, rigging or first aid) are an asset.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends and extended hours as production schedules require.
  • A valid driver’s licence.

What we offer:

  • This is a full-time permanent position, working approximately 37.5 hours per week.
  • Salary range of $55,000 – $65,000, dependent on qualifications and experience.
  • Comprehensive benefits plan, including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage.
  • Employer-matched pension plan.
  • Paid vacation and contingency days; paid sick time.
  • Staff discounts on shows and events.
  • Employee Assistance Program.
  • Training and development opportunities.
