Landlord Liaison

Job Description

The John Howard Society of PEI is seeking a compassionate, relationship-focused, and motivated Landlord Liaison to join our team. The Landlord Liaison will play an important role in supporting individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness by building strong relationships with landlords, property managers, community partners, and clients.

This position will act as a bridge between landlords and individuals seeking or maintaining housing, helping to create successful housing placements and promote long-term housing stability. The Landlord Liaison will also provide practical housing education and support to individuals living in bridge housing or transitioning into permanent housing, including guidance related to tenancy responsibilities, communication with landlords, budgeting, maintaining a home, and resolving common housing challenges.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working with people from diverse backgrounds, navigating challenging situations, building trust, and finding practical solutions that benefit both landlords and tenants.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Landlord & Community Engagement

  • Develop and maintain positive, professional relationships with landlords, property managers, housing providers, and community organizations.
  • Serve as a primary liaison between landlords, clients, and community service providers to support successful housing placements and housing retention.
  • Develop and maintain a network of landlords and available rental opportunities within the community.
  • Proactively engage landlords and property managers to identify potential housing opportunities for individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
  • Respond to landlord concerns and work collaboratively to address tenancy-related issues before they escalate.
  • Participate in landlord engagement activities, community events, housing meetings, and outreach activities.
  • Assist with the development of landlord engagement materials, resources, and information sessions.
  • Travel to housing sites and meet with landlords, property managers, clients, and community partners as required.
  • Facilitate practical housing education sessions for clients in bridge housing and individuals preparing for independent housing.
  • Establish, coordinate, and administer a Landlord Steering Committee to strengthen communication and collaboration between landlords, property managers, housing organizations, and community service providers.

Client & Bridge Housing Support

  • Provide practical support to individuals living in bridge housing and/or transitioning from temporary accommodations into permanent housing.
  • Support clients with housing searches, applications, communication with landlords, and preparation for move-in.
  • Help individuals understand expectations associated with maintaining a tenancy, including rent payments, communication, cleanliness, property care, guests, noise, and respectful relationships with neighbours.
  • Work collaboratively with clients and service providers to develop practical solutions to housing-related challenges.

 

Documentation & Reporting

  • Complete and maintain accurate client documentation and case notes in HIFIS and/or other required databases.
  • Maintain appropriate records related to landlord contacts, housing placements, housing retention, and client support.
  • Support data collection and reporting requirements for applicable programs and projects.
  • Maintain confidentiality and ensure information is handled in accordance with organizational policies and applicable legislation.
  • Participate in team meetings, case discussions, program planning, and evaluation activities.
  • Complete other duties as required.

  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with landlords, clients, community partners, and service providers.
  • Knowledge of local housing resources, landlords, property management companies, and community services is an asset.
  • Understanding of landlord-tenant rights and responsibilities and applicable provincial legislation.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated initiative and the ability to identify housing opportunities and develop creative solutions to housing barriers.
  • Comfortable facilitating small-group education sessions and one-to-one learning.
  • Ability to work with individuals experiencing homelessness, poverty, housing instability, or other barriers to housing.
  • Ability to represent the John Howard Society of PEI professionally and positively within the community.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in human services, social services, community development, business, housing, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in housing, property management, community services, social services, landlord relations, or a related field.
  • Experience facilitating education, workshops, or skills-based programming is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Prince Edward Island’s housing system and community resources is an asset.
  • Criminal record check required.
  • Valid Prince Edward Island driver’s licence and access to reliable, insured transportation.
  • Willingness to travel to client, housing, landlord, and community locations as required.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.

  • Work Location: In person, Charlottetown, PEI, with travel throughout the community as required
