Power Plant Operator / Apprentice

Job Description:

The City of Summerside is seeking a Power Plant Operator to join our Electric Utility team. The Power Plant Operator is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation, monitoring, and maintenance of power generation equipment and auxiliary systems.

This hands-on position involves operating and monitoring engines, alternators, switchboards, pumps, and fuel, water, and steam systems. The successful candidate will also conduct routine inspections and adjustments, perform equipment maintenance, maintain accurate plant logs, and assist with equipment installation and rearrangement as required.

This position is well suited to an individual with strong mechanical aptitude who enjoys working with industrial equipment and is interested in developing specialized knowledge and skills in power generation operations.

Reporting to: Electrical Operations Supervisor

Key Responsibilities:

• Operate and maintain power plant engines and auxiliary equipment.
• Start, stop, control, and operate engines, alternators, switchboards, and auxiliary equipment.
• Operate and monitor pumps, fuel systems, and water and steam systems.
• Conduct routine inspections and adjustments.
• Maintain equipment and structures and assist with the installation and rearrangement of equipment.
• Take soundings and maintain accurate plant logs and records.
• Supervise subordinates when required.
• Participate in required training and qualification programs.
• Perform other related duties and duties as assigned.

Education & Experience:

Required:

• Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Class 3A driver’s licence.
• Ability to successfully complete required qualification testing and training.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to work safely in an industrial environment.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position.
• Willingness and ability to work shifts and respond to operational requirements as required.

Assets:

• A mechanical education or technical background, particularly in diesel mechanics, industrial mechanics, mechanical technology, or a related field, is considered an asset.
• Experience working in a power plant, industrial facility, utility environment, or similar setting is considered an asset.
• Experience with mechanical equipment, heavy-duty repairs, maintenance, and troubleshooting is considered an asset.
• Experience with diesel engines and advanced electronic control systems is considered an asset.
• Experience diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing complex diesel engines or diesel-powered equipment is considered an asset.
• Experience working with both traditional mechanical systems and electronic controls is considered an asset.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to identify and resolve mechanical and equipment-related issues are considered an asset.
• Bilingualism is considered an asset.

Hours: 40 hours per week

Wage: $25.90 – $43.16/hour (depending on apprentice level as per IBEW Local 1928 Collective Agreement)
