The Payroll Officer/Finance Assistant is a dynamic role within the Public Schools Branch (PSB) responsible for ensuring Payroll and Benefit transactions are processed accurately while supporting the Finance team in its day-to-day financial operations and control processes.

As a member of the Finance team, you will demonstrate exceptional accuracy, confidentiality and the ability to work collaboratively with team members, PSB employees, Human Resources and various levels of management. Duties may include but are not limited to: 

  • Utilizing payroll systems to calculate and process employee pay in accordance with Collective Agreements and conditions of employment;
  • Work closely with Human Resources to accurately record and process employee transactions;
  • Establish, maintain, and update employee payroll records, ensuring all documentation is complete and accurate

  • Coding and verifying individual payroll deductions;
  • Compile, verify and record personnel actions including leave records and ROEs;
  • Perform reception duties, including answering telephone calls, greeting visitors, providing routine information, and directing inquiries to appropriate personnel;
  • Coordinate meeting room bookings, room setup, and meeting materials;
  • Receive, sign for, and redirect parcels to the appropriate department, and arrange courier or priority delivery services as required;
  • Recorded and processed receipts while maintaining compliance with internal control and segregation of duties requirements;
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a post-secondary diploma in Business, Accounting or Office Studies from a recognized institution;
  • Recent and relevant experience and training in word processing, spreadsheets, computerized payroll, accounting software, and database management, with demonstrated proficiency in the use of these applications;
  • Recent and relevant experience in computerized payroll processing;
  • Strong interpersonal (written and oral) and organizational skills with ability to meet deadlines;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of payroll procedures and CRA regulations;
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and take initiative.

Assets:

  • Knowledge of Oracle PeopleSoft;

* Testing of certain payroll, software and clerical skills may be required.
