Position Type: Full-Time
Contract Duration: 12 Months (with possibility of renewal subject to funding)
Compensation: From $24.00 per hour

Position Overview

The John Howard Society of Prince Edward Island (JHSPEI) is seeking qualified applicants for a Caseworker position within its housing and homelessness support programs. This role provides case management and housing stabilization support to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or who are at imminent risk of homelessness.

The Caseworker is responsible for delivering client-centered services grounded in Housing First, trauma-informed, and strengths-based practices. The successful candidate will support clients in accessing and maintaining safe, stable housing while addressing barriers to housing stability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive case management to individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness
  • Conduct client assessments based on client needs and housing stability factors
  • Develop and implement individualized, goal-oriented case plans in collaboration with clients
  • Assist clients in locating and securing safe and appropriate housing
  • Provide advocacy and support in navigating community and government systems
  • Accept and manage referrals from clients, community partners, and government agencies
  • Facilitate access to community supports including health services, income supports, and social services
  • Work collaboratively with community organizations to establish support networks for clients
  • Participate in interagency case conferences as required
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation, case notes, and service records in electronic databases including HIFIS
  • Support program data collection, reporting, and evaluation requirements
  • Provide casework services and meet with clients in community settings including shelters, hospitals, correctional facilities, and other service locations
  • Ensure services are delivered in accordance with organizational policies, professional ethics, and program guidelines
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Knowledge of homelessness, housing instability, and Housing First principles
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct client assessments and risk evaluations
  • Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain accurate documentation
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and conflict resolution abilities
  • Proficiency with computer systems, Google databases, and Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and represent the organization positively within other community organizations.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field or High school diploma combined with relevant work experience in social services

Additional qualifications include:

  • Experience working with marginalized or vulnerable populations, including individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use challenges, or mental health concerns
  • Minimum two (2) years of case management or related experience considered an asset
  • Knowledge of community support services and housing resources
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) considered an asset
  • CPR / First Aid certification considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to advocate effectively on behalf of clients
  • Strong understanding of professional boundaries and ethical practice

Employment Requirements

  • Valid Prince Edward Island driver’s license
  • Access to reliable and insured transportation
  • Ability to travel within the community to meet clients and attend partner agencies
  • Legal eligibility to work in Canada
  • Preference may be given to candidates with experience working with youth, veterans, justice-involved individuals, or prevention and diversion programming.
