Job Summary:
An Early Childhood Educator (ECE) on Prince Edward Island is responsible for leading the planning and implementation of a high-quality early learning program that supports children’s development in a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment. This role demonstrates advanced knowledge of child development, curriculum planning, and mentoring of other educators while ensuring compliance with provincial regulations and centre policies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement child-care programs that support and promote the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development of children
- Lead activities such as storytelling, reading, teaching songs, and organizing creative expression through art, dramatic play, music, and physical activity
- Plan and maintain an environment that protects the health, safety, and well-being of children
- Assess the abilities, interests, and needs of children, and communicate progress or concerns with parents and team members
- Observe children for signs of potential learning or behavioural concerns and prepare reports as needed
- Guide and support children in developing proper eating, dressing, and toileting habits
- Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with co-workers and community service providers
- Plan and organize activities for school-age children in before- and after-school programs, as needed
- May supervise and coordinate the activities of early childhood educator assistants
Early Childhood Educator Assistants:
- Support educators in implementing programs that promote children’s overall development
- Engage children through storytelling, songs, and creative activities
- Prepare snacks and assist in setting up rooms for meals and rest periods
- Assist children with eating, dressing, and toileting routines
- Provide written observations on children to educators or supervisors
- Maintain equipment and assist with housekeeping and food preparation duties
- Attend staff meetings and contribute to discussions on children’s progress
- Assist in maintaining records as required
Qualifications:
- Early Childhood Education Level 3 Certification in Prince Edward Island.
- Current First Aid/CPR certification.
- Clear Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
Work Environment:
- Licensed early learning and child care centre setting requiring active engagement, supervision, and collaboration with children, families, and staff.
