Job Description:

MacPhee’s Market is an Independent grocery store located in Souris, PEI. We have an immediate opening for a Baker. This is a full time position, which offers a competitve wage rate and staff benefits.

We will consider a term position for University students who are looking for Full Time work from May to the end of August.

Position Summary

The Baker is responsible for preparing, baking, and finishing a variety of fresh bakery products while ensuring quality, consistency, and food safety standards are maintained. This role contributes to an appealing bakery display and a positive customer experience. In addition to baking duties, this role provides leadership to bakery staff and assumes responsibility for the department in the absence of the Bakery Supervisor.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and bake a variety of products including breads, rolls, pastries, cakes, and specialty items
  • Follow recipes, production schedules, and baking procedures to ensure consistency and quality
  • Plan and execute daily production schedules to meet sales demand while minimizing waste
  • Oversee bakery operations in the absence of the Bakery Supervisor
  • Provide guidance, training, and support to bakery staff
  • Operate bakery equipment such as mixers, ovens, proofers, and slicers safely and efficiently
  • Monitor product quality, freshness, and appearance; discard outdated or substandard items
  • Decorate and finish baked goods as required (icing, glazing, filling, etc.)
  • Maintain proper inventory levels and assist with ordering supplies as needed
  • Ensure bakery displays are well-stocked, clean, and visually appealing
  • Follow all food safety, sanitation, and health regulations
  • Clean and sanitize work areas, equipment, and utensils regularly
  • Assist customers with product inquiries and special orders when required
  • Work collaboratively with team members to meet production and sales goals

Qualifications

  • Previous baking experience in a retail, grocery, or commercial bakery is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of baking techniques, ingredients, and food safety practices
  • Ability to follow recipes and production schedules accurately
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Ability to work early mornings, weekends, and holidays as required
  • Good communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Food Safety Certification required, or willingness to obtain

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (e.g., bags of flour, ingredients)
  • Comfortable working in a warm environment near ovens
  • Repetitive tasks such as mixing, kneading, and decorating

Work Environment

  • Fast-paced grocery store bakery setting
  • Early morning shifts required
  • Exposure to heat, flour dust, and bakery equipment
