This position has a preferred location of West or East Prince but if no qualified applicants for those areas then the posting will be considered for a Charlottetown base.  The Maintenance Trade Worker IV reports directly to the Property Services Manager. This position performs varied maintenance and preventive maintenance tasks at the journeyman level in the building, mechanical, heating and plumbing trades, following established trade techniques and procedures in carrying assignments to completion.

Duties include the following:  

  • Install, repair, maintain all Plumbing/Heating Systems, maintenance, repair/cleaning of boilers and associated work;
  • Assist in scheduling work assignments and maintenance of systems;
  • Responsible for a considerable volume and variety of semi-skilled to skilled maintenance assignments other than their primary trade, ie. heating plants, controls, heat wheels, humidification and dehumidification systems, pumps;
  • Perform mechanic skill work as well as regular maintenance and preventative maintenance;
  • Work results are subject to inspection for adherence to performance and operating standards;
  • Assist in estimating cost of repairs and obtaining quotes from contractors for services, equipment, and procedures;
  • Assist in ensuring school custodial staff are properly trained in daily operations of Plumbing and heating plants;
  • Development of preventative maintenance procedures relating to Plumbing or mechanical systems;
  • Troubleshoot, maintenance, inspect, install, repair and cleaning of all types of boilers;
  • Responsible for maintaining inventory of parts for plumbing, maintenance and mechanical systems;
  • Assist other trades workers on maintenance/servicing of systems/equipment;
  • Other duties as required by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Must have a minimum of Grade 12 education or equivalent;
  • Must have a valid Oil Heat System Technician Red Seal Certification;
  • Must have a valid Plumber Red Seal Certification;
  • Must have experience in maintenance of plumbing, heating systems, pumps & boilers;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and provide a driver’s abstract upon request;
  • Must be in good physical health with the ability to: lift 30-75 pounds, climb to a height of approximately 25 feet, work overhead, and be able to work in a confined space;
  • Demonstrated ability to read/write clearly and interpret blueprints and specifications;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate using electronic devices;
  • Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised and make decisions independently;
  • Exhibit initiative, responsibility, flexibility, leadership, strong communication and problem solving skills with the ability to multitask and establish priorities;
  • A Criminal Abstract is required, with no past or present criminal record which would be detrimental in working in an environment with children, youth and other adults;
  • The successful candidate must have a good previous work and attendance record;
  • The successful candidate must be agreeable to be on call and/or perform overtime when needed and be able to respond in a timely manner.

  • Mechanical and electrical knowledge and a good understanding of building automation systems, components and technology;
  • Experience in commercial Computerized Energy Management Systems;
  • Confined Space Certification;
  • Elevated Platforms Certification;
  • Fall Arrest Certification;
  • Chainsaw safety course;
  • First Aid Certification;
  • WHMIS Certification.
