Job Description:

YOU:

Have a passion for science, technology, engineering, and/or math? Thrive off the energy of elementary school kids and enjoy inspiring young minds? Geek out over equipment like 3D printers and laser cutters? Share your Awesomeness with us! Play an instrument, love sports, act, sing, dance, draw, sew, have some magic tricks up your sleeve?? We are always fascinated by the exciting opportunities to incorporate the A in STEAM!

THE OPPORTUNITY:

STEAM PEI has a new Makerspace, ‘Etl-kisite’tasik’, on the main level of the Epekwitk Assembly of Councils Building in downtown Charlottetown. At this location we will offer special programming throughout the summer including some programs specific for Indigenous students, some highlighting Indigenous knowledge and open to all students, teacher training on digital skills, open Makerspace time, and a wide range of STEAM programs open to all.

STEAM PEI is looking for Summer Makerspace Support to work with our team in developing and facilitating summer programs at the Etl-kisite’tasik Makerspace. Our priority is creating an inclusive, warm, welcoming, educational, and fun space for everyone. What kinds of things will you do? Organizing and facilitating workshops, classes, play invitations, and special events for youth ages 3-18. Monitoring and supporting visitors during open Makerspace times. Learning and teaching others how to use specialized equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, and robotics. Processing retail sales, collecting and tracking payments for the use of the space. Promotion, marketing, and building awareness. Keeping the space tidy for visitors.

Hours for the Etl-kisite’tasik Makerspace are currently 9am-8pm Monday to Friday, Saturdays 10am-4pm and Sundays 12pm-4pm. While those hours are subject to change, based on our summer visitor traffic, there will definitely be some evening and weekend shifts. So if you like to sleep in or just chill in the mornings, this could be the summer job you are looking for!

Compensation is $17/hour for a post-secondary STEM student with relevant experience for 37.5 hours a week and $15/hour for a responsible high school student in Grade 11/12 or just graduating. The real reward is the sense of accomplishment when you see students’ eyes light up with wonder and excitement and when you help other teachers build confidence in STEAM. Contribute to the success of future generations of Islanders by helping build STEAM on PEI.

THE SKILLS:

If you think playing with robots with 6 year olds, blasting off bottle rockets with 12 year olds, and creating stop motion animation videos with 15 year olds is a nightmare, then you probably won’t like this job. If you are thinking, “I can’t believe I would get paid for doing that!”, then you are going to have a BLAST! Experience working with kids and retail sales would be a great combination. Working with kids also means a clean criminal record check and First Aid certification is a must as is ensuring all public health guidelines are maintained.

Some level of knowledge about science, technology, engineering, art, and/or math would be ideal. You definitely need to be comfortable and willing to try new things and continue your own learning as we like to stay on the cutting edge. Bonus points if you have experience with some of the tools we use such as Makey Makey, micro:bits, Scratch, Dash, Canva, Clockify, and Trello.

Diversity of perspective, including diversity of people, knowledge and cultures is important to us. We strive to provide a safe, highly inclusive, welcoming environment where everyone feels a sense of acceptance and belonging. Experience working with BIPOC and/or gender diverse students is also a plus for us!
