Job Summary:
Job Description:
YOU:
Have a passion for science, technology, engineering, and/or math? Love the opportunity to inspire young minds by sharing your passion through in-school and after-school programs? Think Ms. Frizzle on Magic School Bus, Neil deGrasse Tyson, or Bill Nye Science Guy. Share your Awesomeness with us! Play an instrument, love sports, act, sing, dance, draw, knit, have some magic tricks up your sleeve?? We are always fascinated by the exciting opportunities to incorporate the A in STEAM!
THE OPPORTUNITY:
STEAM PEI is looking for an Educational Facilitator to work with our team in developing and facilitating in-school experiences, camps, workshops, classes, and parties across PEI. This year we have a special focus on climate science, and digital skills programs. Join the STEAM Team and feel like a rock star when you walk into a classroom, arms loaded with fun robotics or science experiments.
Compensation is $20/hour for a recent post-secondary STEM graduate with relevant experience for 37.5 hours week. There may be a few evenings and weekend hours, but most of the work that needs to be done happens during, or just after school hours. We believe in doing what needs to be done when it needs to be done, so there is plenty of flexibility to maintain the work/life balance you are looking for. We also offer benefits – medical, dental, insurance – to make sure you are taken care of!
The real reward is the sense of accomplishment when you see students’ eyes light up with wonder and excitement and when you help other teachers build confidence in STEAM. Contribute to the success of future generations of Islanders by helping build STEAM on PEI.
THE SKILLS:
You will need to have a reliable vehicle and driver’s license because we cover the Island “like the dew”, and quite frankly, we almost always have a trunk full of gadgets and materials. Fluency in French is definitely an asset. So is experience with graphic design (Canva and/or the Adobe Suite) and promotion through social media, MailChimp and WordPress.
If you think playing with robots with 6 year olds, blasting off bottle rockets with 12 year olds, and creating stop motion animation videos with 15 year olds is a nightmare, then you probably won’t like this job. If you are thinking, “I can’t believe I would get paid for doing that!”, then you are going to have a BLAST! Working with kids also means a clean criminal record check and First Aid certification is a must as is ensuring all public health guidelines are maintained.
Although we have a beautiful new home on the Charlottetown Waterfront, the ability to work independently – from our new location, from home and on the go – as well as in collaboration with other members of the STEAM Team is key. Some level of knowledge about science, technology, engineering and/or math would be ideal. You definitely need to be comfortable and willing to try new things and continue your own learning as we like to stay on the cutting edge. Bonus points if you have experience with some of the tools we use such as Makey Makey, micro:bits, Scratch, Dash, Canva, Clockify, and Trello.
Diversity of perspective, including diversity of people, knowledge and cultures is important to us. We strive to provide a safe, highly inclusive, welcoming environment where everyone feels a sense of acceptance and belonging. Experience working with BIPOC and/or gender diverse students is also a plus for us!
