Job Description:

Reports to: Director of Wekatesk Aboriginal Head Start

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement child-care programs that support and promote the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development of children.
  • Provide opportunities for children to express creativity through the media of art, dramatic play, music and physical activity.
  • Lead activities by telling or reading stories, teaching songs, crafts and taking children outdoors.
  • Complete daily planning sheets and monthly calendar and submit to the Director.
  • Guide and assist children in the development of proper eating, dressing, toilet habits, and change diapers as required.
  • Maintain AHS equipment and assist in housekeeping.
  • Observe children for signs of potential learning or behavioral delays and refer to appropriate services as required.
  • Complete progress reports, child portfolios, observations and documentation on time.
  • Attend staff meetings, case conferences, and hold parent teacher interviews twice a year.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with co-workers, community, and service providers working with our children
  • Drive the bus as required.
  • Attend training as required.
  • Submit weekly time sheets to AHS director for data entry
  • All other duties as needed by Executive Director of the Mi’Kmaq Family Resource Center for the purpose of project success.

Qualifications:

  • Early Childhood Education Diploma.
  • Has experience working with Indigenous children and families.
  • Has a strong sense of confidentiality.
  • Is knowledgeable of Indigenous Culture, History, and current affairs.
  • Flexible, highly motivated, responsible, and able to work independently and with a team using the Team Teacher approach.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Able to use computer programs such as email, social media, power point and word.
  • Regular Driver’s license Class 4 drivers license an asset
  • Access to a reliable vehicle is an asset.
  • Police Record Check for Vulnerable Sector is required at your own expense.

Hours of Work for this Contract Position:
Full-Time for 40 hours a week
Monday-Friday between 8:00-4:30.
Some evening and weekend work required.
