​Summer Tech Counsellor

Working closely with children and youth, youth-workers, camp counsellors, partner organizations and volunteers to teach children and youth kid-friendly coding, build and program gadgets, invent cool things, create and problem-solve, experiment and have lots of fun.  You must be an energetic, empathetic, nurturing, creative and entrepreneurial role-model, as well as comfortable and confident with children and adults representing diverse cultures, ethnicities and backgrounds.

​This position is funded through Student Summer Skills Incentive program.  To qualify and apply for the position, you must be enrolled in full-time University or Community College programs

​Role & responsibilities includes:

Under the direction of the Supervisor:  work closely with children and teach them how to be creative problem-solvers and critical thinkers using innovation and technology, with an entrepreneurial mindset, in partnership with youth-serving organizations and their camp counsellors, staff and volunteers.
Engage, inspire, lead and teach children about innovation, technology and entrepreneurship through youth-focused, creative, self-directed, group-based projects to empower creativity, invention, problem-solving and learning.  Emphasis is on hands-on, experiential learning through doing in a collaborative, group-based, hands-on, peer-to-peer, social environment.
Role-model healthy and positive outlook, and respect boundaries.
Working with a wide variety of technology and creative tools, and within existing organizational/program infrastructures.
Help maintain/repair equipment, etc.
Coordinating and scheduling workshops/sessions, volunteers, etc.
Holding and facilitating face-to-face and group meetings with staff, camp counsellors, volunteers, stakeholders, etc.
Writing reports (with analysis) and presentations and presenting findings; and taking videos.
Communicating, collaborating, liaising, participating and supporting activities/programs with partner organizations, volunteers, funders/supporters, stakeholders, etc.
Other duties as assigned relevant to role.

Summer Tech Counsellor is a full-time (35 hours/week), 10-week summer position starting 25-Jun-18 (to be confirmed).

​Qualifications

Studying early childhood education, social work, computer science, IT, technology or programming, engineering, science, social studies, and marketing and communications.
Experience working with children and youth and managing projects/programs.
Professional, responsible and fair conduct with staff, volunteers, stakeholders, donors, sponsors and supporters.
Excellent communication and social media skills (both spoken and written).
Highly creative self-starter, with an ability to engage and facilitate consultative processes and consensus building with staff, senior volunteers, stakeholders, and implement with a keen attention to detail.
Ability to manage projects and people, and multi-task to meet competing deadlines.
Demonstrated capacity to work effectively in a diverse work environment.
High computer proficiency with MS Office (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook), e-mail, social media platforms and internet research, with fundraising database experience a plus.
Ability to actively provide constructive strategic, creative and logistical input, solutions, planning and problem-solving.
Team player who is happy to pitch-in and help out as required.

Learning about innovation, technology and entrepreneurship to engage and inspire children and foster their social and educational development:  communication, creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving, collaboration and digital skills.
Working effectively in teams with staff and volunteers, volunteers and organization partners to achieve deliverables and outcomes through collaboration, shared learning and knowledge exchange, and research and analysis; and autonomously.
Collaborating and actively participating in a multi-stakeholder environment.
Navigating complex situations; understanding people dynamics and networks; and engaging and motivating a diversity of people.

Employment period is for 8-10 weeks depending on area
Successful candidate must be prepared to work from various locations, as required.
