Job Description:

The PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada is looking for a qualified IT Technician on a short-term contract who will install and maintain computer systems and help maintain the local network aiming for the highest functionality. The Technician will also assist individual users and train them as necessary for appropriate and safe usage of the IT infrastructure.

The IT technician will also be required to perform data entry, data processing, and report generation.

The successful candidate must have a thorough knowledge of computer software and hardware and a variety of internet applications, networks, and operating systems. The candidate must also have great troubleshooting abilities and attention to detail.

The goal is to set up and maintain computer systems, and keep them updated and efficient to optimize the use of technology in day-to-day business operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Set up workstations with computers and necessary peripheral devices (routers, printers etc.)
  • Check computer hardware (HDD, mouses, keyboards etc.) to ensure functionality
  • Install and configure appropriate software and functions according to specifications
  • Help maintain the local network
  • Ensure security and privacy of the local network and computer systems
  • Provide orientation and guidance to users on how to operate new software and computer equipment
  • Organize and schedule upgrades and maintenance without deterring others from completing their work
  • Diagnose and resolve problems (e.g. repair or replace parts)
  • Maintain records/logs of repairs, fixes, and maintenance schedule
  • Identify computer or network equipment shortages and place orders
  • Perform electronic data entry
  • Maintain the VoIP telephone system
  • Generate reports based on the data from SQL databases

Requirements:

  • Proven experience as an IT Technician or relevant position
  • Excellent diagnostic and problem solving skills
  • Excellent communication ability
  • Outstanding organizational and time-management skills
  • In depth understanding of diverse computer systems and networks
  • Good knowledge of internet security and data privacy principles
  • Expert knowledge of Windows OS and familiarity with MAC and Linux OS
  • Understanding of relational database concepts
  • Intermediate PHP programming skill
  • Basic understanding of Linux server setup and configuration
  • Experience with TCP networking
  • Configuration and management for DD-WRT routers is a plus 

Education:

  • Degree in Computer Science, engineering or relevant field is an asset
  • Certification as IT Technician (e.g. CompTIA A+, Microsoft Certified IT Professional) is an asset
