Job Description:

City Cinema is a dynamic, independent movie theatre that has operated in downtown Charlottetown since 1993. The cinema features films from the TIFF circuit, as well as documentaries, indies, classics, and locally produced projects. The cinema also presents the annual Charlottetown Film Festival, and other events. As of March 1, 2019, City Cinema operates as a non-profit entity, supported by the Charlottetown Film Society Board of Directors, and has begun a new chapter in it’s dedication to bringing a diverse selection of film to Islanders and to support local filmmakers and film culture on PEI.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the successful candidate will be a visionary, collaborative, and skilled leader who will strategically guide the organization in achieving it’s mission. The Charlottetown Film Society’s Executive Director will lead the cinema team, continue to enhance the range and quality of the programs, and build strong networks and partnerships. The ideal candidate will have a relevant university or college degree and experience working with a volunteer team, public and private funders, as well as a Board of Directors. The leader we seek will have outstanding organizational development capacities, strong communication skills, a love of film, project management experience, and the strategic capabilities to ensure the ongoing sustainability of the cinema. Position is on a one year contract, with possibility for extension.

Duties:

  • Lead and coordinate all aspects of organizing and presenting the Charlottetown Film Festival.
  • Consult with the cinema’s General Manager to promote a well-balanced program of films while optimizing the use of the space and resources.
  • Develop creative solutions to economic challenges.
  • Successfully coordinate and manage cinema projects and events.
  • Foster the ongoing sustainability of the cinema.
  • Development and submission of grant and funding proposals.

Marketing and Development:

  • Develop and execute marketing and advertising for all aspects of the cinema and festival, including films and rentals.
  • Expand local revenue-generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations simultaneously retiring debt.
  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications- from web presence and social media to external relations; improve visibility and general profile of cinema.
  • Responsible for theatre media and press relations.
  • Identify new opportunities and develop strategic partnerships/sponsors for cinema and the annual festival.

Operations

  • Assist in the management of all paperwork related to government, and other regulatory bodies.
  • Assist the general manager in the development and management of on-screen advertising and trailers.
  • Create monthly reports for the Board, Work with the Board/Committees on planning/budgeting and projects.
  • With assistance, solicit and select films for the annual festival.
  • Assist General Manager with technical support (ticketing and online systems, graphic design, etc.).
