Job Description:
Job Purpose
Provides a variety of construction services which may be to construct, erect, install, maintain and repair structures and components of structures made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel and other materials.
Accountabilities
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings and sketches to determine specifications and calculate requirements.
- Prepare layouts in conformance to building codes, using measuring tools
- Measure, cut, shape, assemble and join materials made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel and other materials.
- Build foundations, install floor beams, lay subflooring and erect walls and roof systems.
- Fit and install trim items, such as doors, stairs, moulding and hardware.
- Maintain, repair and renovate residences and wooden structures in mills, mines, hospitals, industrial plants and other establishments.
- Supervise apprentices and other construction workers.
- May prepare cost estimates for clients.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications Education
- Completion of secondary school.
- Completion of a 2-year apprenticeship program or a combination of over four years of work experience in the trade and some high school, college or industry courses in carpentry is usually required to be eligible for trade certification.
- Red seal certification is an asset.
Experience
- A minimum of 2 to 5 years working as a carpenter is an asset but we are also willing to train someone with basic construction knowledge.
Skills
- Working with materials to construct, renovate and maintain structures.
- Determining phases and steps, defining activities and tasks and establishing schedules to complete objectives on time and within budget.
- Producing work based on aesthetic or functional design concepts.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of providing service to clients to maintain and build organizational success.
- Knowledge of materials, methods, tools and equipment involved in the construction and repair of buildings or other structures such as highways, roads, mines or products.
- Knowledge of public safety and security operations and systems, of policy, regulations and procedures for the protection of people, data and property.
- Ability to do basic mathematical calculations.
- Effective problem solving and decision-making abilities; uses tact and discretion in dealing with others while maintaining confidentiality.
- Strong organizational and time management skills to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities within deadlines.
- Extremely organized and detail-oriented.
- Must be self-motivated and directed.
- Must be able to formulate procedures and monitor outcomes.
Other
- Must be willing to travel and have own vehicle.
- Basic carpentry tools and steel-toed boots required.
