We recently updated our online resume for job seekers by making it the sole source of information available to employers searching for talent on WorkPEI. In essence, it serves as both a resume for applying to jobs and a member profile, and it’s important to understand both applications of the online resume if you are to get the most benefit out of our platform.
In order to apply to a job published by a WorkPEI member employer, you must first sign up for an account and create your online resume. This requires you to complete a form with information about your education, previous work experience, skills, certifications, contact information, etc. Once published, when you apply to a job, the employer receives an email notification with a link to view your online resume.
What some job seekers may fail to realize, however, is that you’ve also submitted your resume to a searchable database available to almost 1,000 employers. These employers can search your resume by keywords, or within any of the fields used to populate your resume. If your resume comes up in an employer’s search results, the employer may choose to contact you through WorkPEI about a published job or a planned hire.
Pro Tip – Many WorkPEI employers search our resume database before publishing a job, and if they find eligible candidates within their search results, will reach out via email to discuss the opportunity directly. This scenario illustrates what is often referred to as the “hidden job market”.
If you’ve joined WorkPEI, or have considered doing so in future, it’s important to create a polished online resume and to maintain it regularly. Keep time sensitive fields such as your employment status, type of employment you are seeking and your availability as current as possible, otherwise you may be excluding yourself from job openings. You should also update any recent training or work experience to make sure your information is a true representation of your knowledge and skills.
On WorkPEI, remember not to forget about your resume. It’s the key to finding employment in PEI.
